Kasabian, ACT III: following the guru

A listener and a record player by a London window

I like Kasabian most when they let a ridiculous idea survive the edit. ACT III has that confidence. Big choruses, short songs, and enough oddness to make me want to play it again. London gets this one on my music map.

THE GURU AND THE CRYPTO TIME MACHINE is the track I would start with. The title sounds like a machine built to sell you a way out of your own head. A guide who knows where to go. A device whose workings you cannot quite understand. The promise that somewhere else, or some other time, everything will make sense.

“Follow me, you can be just like everyone you see”

That line gets under my skin. The invitation is so appealing that you can almost miss what you are agreeing to. Follow long enough and your idea of yourself starts to resemble everyone else's.

I hear the guru as a symbol of borrowed certainty. It could be a charismatic person, a feed, or a model that produces a confident answer whenever you ask. The opaque machine makes the promise more persuasive: you cannot see how it works, so there is plenty of room to imagine what it knows.

Building AI makes me sensitive to this. I want these systems to be useful. I also know how easily a fluent answer can take the place of the effort needed to form a judgement. The seductive part is the relief. Someone, or something, seems to have worked it out for you.

What I enjoy about the song is that it makes that surrender sound exciting. The absurd title, the insistence, the restless changes: the attraction and the unease belong together. Explaining it too neatly would spoil it.

ACT III gives that track good company. SOULMATE has the directness I want from Kasabian. SILVER APPLE EYES lets the record wander. SAY YOU (CLOSER) brings it home warmly. I like an album willing to be immediate and peculiar in the same half-hour.

The guru can keep talking. I want to hear the song again.
