RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback)
RLHF is an advanced machine learning technique that combines reinforcement learning with human evaluations to train language models and other AI systems. It consists of three key phases:
- Initial Policy Training: A base model is trained on a large corpus of text data
- Reward Modeling: Human annotators rate model outputs to train a reward model using labeled data pairs
- Policy Optimization: The base model is fine-tuned using RL to maximize the reward model's scores
Key Components: - Human feedback collectors who evaluate model outputs - A reward model that learns to predict human preferences from labeled data - Policy optimization algorithms (often PPO) for model updating - Careful consideration of feedback quality and annotator alignment
Benefits: - Enables direct optimization for human preferences - Reduces unwanted behaviors and biases - Provides more control over model outputs
Challenges: - Requires large amounts of high-quality human feedback - Complex training pipeline with multiple components - Risk of reward hacking and gaming the feedback system - High computational and operational costs
RLHF represents a significant advancement in AI alignment, though its complexity and resource requirements currently limit widespread adoption.
