Story of Transformer
The transformer architecture was introduced in 2017 by Vaswani et al. in their paper "Attention is All You Need". It revolutionized the field of natural language processing (NLP) by providing a more efficient and effective way to process sequential data, such as text.
Before transformers, recurrent neural networks (RNNs) were the standard approach for processing sequential data. However, RNNs suffer from the problem of vanishing gradients, which makes it difficult to train them for long sequences. Transformers introduced a new approach to processing sequential data, using self-attention mechanisms to allow different parts of the input sequence to interact with each other.
This new architecture led to significant improvements in the performance of NLP tasks, such as language modeling, machine translation, and question answering. It also paved the way for the development of more complex and advanced NLP models, such as BERT, GPT-3, and T5.
In summary, the transformer architecture was a major breakthrough in the field of NLP, providing a more efficient and effective way to process sequential data, and enabling the development of more complex and advanced NLP models.
